Supreme Court Orders NIA Probe into Violent Attack on Judicial Officers in Malda

The Court’s order comes against the backdrop of the deletion of over 90 lakh names from a total of 7.6 crore voters, intensifying scrutiny over electoral processes. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant strongly rebuked West Bengal officials for their failure to respond to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court regarding the incident. The bench issued firm directions to the police to transfer all evidence and arrestees connected to the case to the NIA for a comprehensive probe.

Significantly, the Court refused to withdraw central forces, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the need for continued security oversight. At the same time, it fast-tracked resolutions related to the voter roll controversy, clearing nearly 60 lakh claims and facilitating the establishment of tribunals to adjudicate the remaining appeals.

The bench emphasized the necessity of fair hearings to safeguard voting rights, particularly in light of allegations that errors in the voter list revision have impacted even prominent families, including that of renowned artist Nandalal Bose.

The Court’s intervention highlights the gravity of the attack on judicial officers and raises broader concerns over administrative accountability, electoral integrity, and the protection of democratic rights during a critical electoral period.
